ENGINEERING

Engineering selection guide

Deeper selection criteria after the product portfolio — grounded in verified Teltonika specifications.

  1. ApplicationPlant, machine, remote asset or mobile system?
  2. WANFixed Ethernet, cellular primary, or hybrid?
  3. CellularLTE, 5G or RedCap — only where needed and documented?
  4. LANPort count, PoE passthrough, downstream devices?
  5. Wi‑FiClient AP mode or wireless WAN — device-specific?
  6. InterfacesSerial, I/O or field ports required?
  7. ResilienceDual SIM, failover, VPN, dual WAN?
  8. ManagementLocal admin vs RMS-compatible fleet operations?
  9. EnvironmentIndustrial enclosure, outdoor, temperature, mounting?

Connectivity role first — not a performance ladder.

Documented Teltonika router families span compact Ethernet edge devices through cellular and outdoor variants. Classification helps scope the enquiry; suitability is confirmed per project.

Ethernet / fixed-line edge

Compact industrial routing for wired WAN and local LAN integration (e.g. RUT200-class families — model-specific).

Cellular industrial routing

LTE/4G WAN and backup connectivity for remote and distributed sites (selected RUT families).

High-performance cellular / 5G

Higher-throughput cellular where documented for specific series (e.g. RUTX/RUT956-class — family-dependent).

Outdoor / mobile

Hardened enclosures for transport, construction and outdoor cabinets (e.g. RUTC/OTD-class — device-specific).

Capability dimensions for industrial routing.

  • Ethernet WAN/LAN
Wired WAN and local network integration
    Available on selected families
  • 4G / LTE
    Cellular primary or backup WAN
    Family- and model-dependent
  • 5G / RedCap
Higher bandwidth or efficient 5G variants
Selected series only — not portfolio-wide
  • Wi‑Fi
    Wireless client or access roles
    Model-specific
  • Dual SIM / eSIM
    Operator redundancy and failover options
    Where documented in datasheets
  • Serial / I/O
    Field interfaces on selected routers
    Not all routers
  • VPN / failover
Secure remote access and WAN resilience
Feature set varies by RutOS version and model
  • RMS
    Fleet management for compatible devices
Teltonika RMS — not a GermanSTS product

Protocol, VPN and interface support varies by device, firmware and configuration.

Deployment & WAN resilience

Where industrial routing is typically assessed.

Production & machines
  • Shop-floor VLAN egress
  • Machine network uplink
  • Cellular backup for lines
Remote infrastructure
  • Utilities and metering sites
  • Distributed PLCs
  • Temporary construction links
Mobile & outdoor
  • Onboard connectivity
  • Outdoor cabinets
  • GNSS on supported devices
  • Dual SIM and eSIM options on selected cellular routers for operator redundancy.
  • WAN failover between Ethernet and cellular where supported by the device and configuration.
  • VPN and secure remote access concepts documented by the manufacturer for compatible RutOS devices.
  • Load balancing and multi-WAN behaviour is model-specific — confirm against datasheet and project topology.

PHYSICAL LAYER

Router placement depends on correct cabling.

WAN and LAN ports, PoE passthrough, antenna feeds and cabinet routing all interact with cable, fibre patch and grounding decisions in the same project.

  • Industrial Ethernet and data cables to downstream switches and devices
  • Fibre uplink or media conversion where architecture requires it
  • Control and serial cabling to adjacent machine areas
  • Power, surge and antenna cabling for cellular/outdoor routers

Technical FAQ

Direct answers on selection and scope — without marketing promises.

Industrial router vs industrial gateway?

Routers primarily provide IP routing, WAN connectivity and network resilience. Gateways emphasise field interfaces and protocol/data-path integration. Some devices combine functions — selection depends on interfaces, protocols and topology.

When is a cellular industrial router required?

When fixed-line WAN is unavailable, impractical, or must be backed up by cellular connectivity. LTE, 5G or RedCap suitability depends on coverage, bandwidth needs and documented device support — verified per project.

Can GermanSTS source routers and industrial cabling together?

GermanSTS can align router requirements with related industrial Ethernet, fibre and control cabling within the published cable and sourcing portfolio for the same project.

Router capabilities referenced on this page are based on documented Teltonika Networks product families. GermanSTS is not the manufacturer and does not market RutOS or RMS as its own products.
