ENGINEERING

Engineering selection guide

Switch selection depends on port topology, managed features, PoE and uplink architecture — verified per target model, not assumed portfolio-wide.

DISTRIBUTION PATH

Distribution architecture

  1. DevicesField / machine devicesMachine & field devices
  2. AccessIndustrial Ethernet accessAccess layer
  3. SwitchingSwitching / segmentationSegmentation point
  4. UplinkUplink / fibre / routerBackbone exit
  5. InfrastructureControl / network infrastructurePlant infrastructure

MANAGED VS UNMANAGED

Unmanaged

  • Straightforward port expansion on machine networks
  • No VLAN or remote diagnostics on the switch itself
  • Suited where topology is static and segmentation happens upstream

Managed

Managed capabilities are family- and firmware-dependent — not implied for every industrial switch SKU.

  • VLAN and segmentation where supported by TswOS devices
  • Diagnostics and monitoring features on selected families
  • Industrial protocol support (e.g. PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, MRP) on documented models only

PoE / PoE+

Data and power on one cable — where documented.

PoE and PoE+ simplify cameras, access points and edge devices when switch and cable plant are specified together. Cable category, length and thermal limits still matter for reliable delivery.

Available on selected Teltonika TSW families — not all port counts or SKUs.

FIBRE / SFP

Distance, backbone and electrical isolation.

SFP or fibre uplinks extend reach between cabinets, cross large halls or separate electrically noisy zones. Patch, backbone and termination choices belong in the same engineering review as switch selection.

SFP/fibre port availability is model-specific — confirm against official datasheets.

PROTOCOL & MANAGEMENT

Industrial and management features — qualified.

  • PROFINET
Industrial Ethernet protocol on supported managed switches
    Selected models
  • EtherNet/IP
    Automation network integration
    Device-dependent
  • MRP
    Ring redundancy where documented
    Not portfolio-wide
  • TswOS
    Teltonika switch operating system
    Manufacturer platform — not GermanSTS
  • RMS
    Remote management for compatible switches
    Where RMS integration is documented

Do not assume every managed switch supports every industrial protocol.

SELECTION MATRIX

Dimensions for switch enquiries.

  1. ManagedVLAN, diagnostics or industrial protocols required?
  2. PortsAccess count, uplink ports, growth headroom?
  3. PoECameras, APs or edge devices needing inline power?
  4. FibreSFP uplink distance or backbone architecture?
  5. MountingDIN rail, cabinet, temperature class?
  6. SegmentationMachine cell isolation vs flat L2?
  7. ManagementLocal only vs RMS-compatible fleet?
  8. EnvironmentIndustrial enclosure, vibration, EMC context?

SWITCH + CABLING

Switch selection and cable plant are one decision.

Industrial Ethernet cable category, shielding, fibre patching and PoE length limits determine whether the switching design works in the field — not just the port count on the datasheet.

  • Industrial Ethernet cable and connector systems to field devices
  • Fibre backbone and patch where SFP uplinks are used
  • Patching, cabinet routing and strain relief
  • PoE cable derating and bundle considerations where applicable

Technical FAQ

Direct answers on selection and scope — without marketing promises.

Managed vs unmanaged industrial switch?

Unmanaged switches extend port count with minimal configuration. Managed switches add VLAN, diagnostics and — on documented models — industrial protocols and remote management. Choice depends on segmentation needs and supported features on the target family.

When is PoE useful on an industrial network?

When edge devices such as cameras or access points should receive power over the same Ethernet run. Switch PoE budget, cable category and length must be verified together — PoE is not universal across all switch SKUs.

Industrial switch vs router?

Switches distribute and segment Ethernet within a site or machine network. Routers handle IP routing and WAN connectivity. Gateways focus on field interfaces and protocols. Many projects combine all three layers.

Can GermanSTS source switches and industrial cabling together?

Yes — switch port plans, PoE loads and fibre uplinks can be reviewed alongside industrial Ethernet and fibre cabling in the same project enquiry.

Switch capabilities referenced here are based on documented Teltonika Networks families. GermanSTS does not manufacture switches or TswOS.
